THE WATCHWORD TECHNIQUE

A quick task we had to do today to help us on our journey of self discovery! The watchword technique is like a mind map in reverse where you start with 16 words which relate to whatever subject you are trying to narrow down and discover what you are really looking for. This website describes it as "A word-association test that can be used as an aid to in-depth personal understanding. Its purpose is to help you identify your psychological type and to examine important psychological forces and tendencies operating within your own being."

We will be given these to do at different points throughout our course to see if or how our work has developed. Based on the 16 words that I used to relate to my practise my end result was exploring & sharing.

How it works: You begin by emptying your mind of everything. Sit still and quiet for a few minutes before you begin. You start with 16 words or small sentences based around the subject you are trying to narrow down. These 16 words go in the top and bottom 8 boxes, and you have to put them down quickly, try not to think about them too much (this is quite hard to do!). You then look at the first two words you put down and in the next box (refer to diagram above for the order!) you put a word that relates these two things together. This new word can't be a repeat of any word that you have used in the previous box though. Carry on like this until you have filled in all the boxes and narrowed the last two into one. Voila!
